The drought of 2022 did not spare the settlements of Szeklerland either, as the rainfall in 2020 and 2021 was already below the long-term average. Springs and small watercourses dried up, and water restrictions persisted in many settlements. Fortunately, the Anghel Saligny public works programme, announced by the Ministry of Development, has funded water procurement research as well.
We carried out electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) measurements for drinking water supply purposes in Vlăhița (Băile Homorod), Dârjiu, Reci, Atid, Lupeni and Joseni.
The Municipality of Lupeni was already facing a significant water shortage at the beginning of the summer, and immediately after the evaluation of the measurements, it started to organise drilling and pipeline construction works.
The terrain was quite a challenge again, which was further made more difficult by the fact that, due to the extreme dryness, we used 1 m long steel electrodes instead of 30 cm ones to reach a slightly wetter part of the ground. We watered each electrode point to ensure impeccable data quality, so we moved even more slowly than usual. We managed to measure the longest electrical resistivity section in the company’s history, which at 7 kilometres in length resulted in a data set of hundreds of thousands of points.
Based on the evaluation of a total of 17 km of measured sections, two drill sites were planned on Kalonda Hill and one drill site in the area of Morăreni at a depth of 150 m. Although the two boreholes did not reach this depth, they were successful: the water yield from the wells reached 200 m3 per day, which covers the needs of the population.
